"...I think we all have a child within us that's trying to be let out. Somewhere along in our society we say, 'Quit plaing, get serious and mature. Grow up!' And our children look around and say, 'Grow up to what?' And we look at our adult society and say, 'Is that what we really want our children to grow up to?' Somewhere along we kill the child in us..."
Glenn Q. Bannerman creates fun wherever he goes. He is well-known in APCE, in the Presbyterian Church (USA), at the Montreat Conference Center, and ecumenically for workshops and activities which emphasize inclusive recreational activity for all those present. He also has a reputation for changing cast-off materials into recreational tools for all age groups. Glenn has led workshops throughout the United States and in other countries, most recently at the invitation of the government of the Netherlands. When he retires in 1989, Bannerman will have been 32 years at the Presbyterian School of Christian Education, Richmond, VA -two years as a student and 30 years on the faculty, as Professor of Recreation and Outdoor Education.
An innovative and unusual teacher, Glenn shows his students how to create materials for recreational and youth ministry, such as puppetry, crafts, camping and outdoor recreation. He is known for his great, affirming hugs, and he enlivens all events with his energetic personality. In 1967 Glenn began a Community Recreation Program to serve the northside Richmond neighborhood in which PSCE is located. The program serves as a laboratory for the school's students in Christian Education studying for the Masters of Arts degree.
Glenn wrote Guide for Recreation Leaders with R. Fakkema. He has contributed articles to several magazines and directed square dancing and clog dancing records. On retirement, Glenn and his wife, Evelyn, will live in Montreat, NC.
