JOB DESCRIPTION: Director of Children’s & Youth Ministry

Reports To: Pastor / Head of Staff

Skills, Experience, Knowledge and Abilities Needed:
Bachelor’s Degree in Education, Ministry, or Social Work and/or Certification in Christian Education
At least 1 summer in a Christian leadership role or school year in a school/church setting
Deep personal faith and an interest in continuous spiritual growth
Experience in working with children and youth
Interpersonal skills with demonstrated ability to relate to, teach and lead a variety of age groups including working with parents and adult volunteers
Strong communication, organizational, delegation and time management skills
Strong technological skills, i.e., Google Suite, Zoom, social media, databases etc.
Desired Characteristics Include: Positivity, creativity, enthusiasm, energy, patience, flexibility, independence, a collaborative spirit, and an ability to take initiative
Openness to different viewpoints
Physical, spiritual and emotional stamina to maintain energy and patience during overnight and extended work periods for retreats and mission trips

Job Responsibilities & Tasks:
Help determine vision and plans for nursery, elementary, middle school and high school programs
Staff Children’s Ministry, Youth Ministry, and Choristers programs
Coordinate a core group of advisors and volunteers for each of these to determine and direct programming
Develop relationships
Build relationships with children and youth establishing trust, and helping to develop and nurture their faith
Establish relationships with parents and/or caregivers and volunteers
Arrange occasional programming for parents, caregivers, and volunteers to support them in their spiritual journeys
Sunday School (weekly September through end of May/beginning of June)
In collaboration with the Children’s Ministry Team, choose and order curriculum
Sunday School teacher recruitment and training, including teen helpers for nursery/SS
Gather supplies, organize rooms, stock snacks for Sunday mornings
Gather supplies and assure worship busy boxes, worship table activities, Children’s worship bulletins, etc. are filled weekly
Staff in-sanctuary worship table when needed
Lead Children’s Message during worship one time each month
Support additional programs such as but not limited to the Christmas Eve Nativity service, Good Friday Children’s service, 3rd grade Bible presentation, Rally Day, and end of year picnic
Choristers (Elementary Children’s Music Program-weekly October through beginning of May)
Staff as second adult Wednesday evenings from 3:30-6:30pm
Teach a 15-20 minute Christian education & formation lesson
Participate in the continuing visioning process for this program as it develops
Youth Groups Gatherings (weekly September through end of May/beginning of June)
Recruit, train and support adult advisors
Coordinate a core group of advisors and youth to determine, direct and lead weekly programming
Plan and lead occasional youth activities beyond regularly scheduled programs such as movie nights, mission opportunities, etc., and facilitate other offerings for youth as needed including special events, presbytery gatherings, retreats and so forth
With the help of the Youth Committee, plan and lead Youth Trips (mission trips, retreats, Triennium), including research and selection of destinations; development of budget; coordination of registration process; recruitment of adult advisors; and provision of spiritual leadership related to the trip.
Coordinate with Director of Music to:
Support Youth participation in Bells and Chancel Choir
Support Youth participation in special services
Provide pastoral care to the youth, their families and the supporting communities in coordination with the Associate Pastor for Congregational Care
Assess the overall youth program to identify and address needs and achieve balance between current traditions and new initiatives.
Welcome and transition new youth and visitors
Develop leadership of youth
Lead Commissioning Class (Confirmation)
With the help of the Youth Committee and the Session oversee and implement program year-long curriculum as needed with consultation of other staff
Administration and Communication
Communicate regularly with families of children and youth
Regularly update the Third Church family Facebook page
Keep the Third Church community informed of children’s and youth ministry activities and goals
Aware of community agencies and resources that work with and for children and youth
Other
Participate in weekly Staff Meetings and additional staff development opportunities
Monday Morning Connection (in a regular staff rotation) per discretion of Head of Staff
Create and lead regular (staff rotation) Tuesday Morning Prayer per discretion of Head of Staff
Attend session meetings as needed
Professional Development – Seek continuing education and training in the
field of Children’s and Youth Ministry

Salary: $60,00-65,000 per annum
