Summary
First Presbyterian Church is seeking a full-time Director of Christian Education (DCE), with a primary focus on creating and leading a comprehensive program of Christian Education and discipleship for all church members. This person is called by the Session (Board of Elders) and is responsible to the Session through the Christian Education Committee and works under the immediate supervision of the Senior Pastor.
The DCE is responsible to develop, implement, and maintain a Christian Education ministry for the spiritual formation and nurture of all church members. This requires working closely with the Senior Pastor and pastoral staff, Director of Youth Ministry and Christian Education Committee to organize and resource our discipleship programs with an emphasis on the growth and nurture of children and adults.

First Presbyterian Church is a historic 600-member multi-generational congregation. We are in the heart of downtown Fayetteville, NC, just 9 miles from Ft. Bragg, one of the largest military bases in our country. The church is deeply invested in both local and international missions. We have a long history of excellent ministry with children. We have a strong music and worship ministry for all ages. Worship leans toward a warm, traditional style.
FPC is part of the Presbyterian Church USA (PCUSA). Theologically, the majority of the congregation would identify as moderate to conservative within the Presbyterian and Reformed tradition.
Duties
1. Recruit, equip, train, and supervise church members and volunteers for the tasks of teaching and leading Christian Education in a shared capacity. Ensure the implementation of the Children and Youth Protection Policy in conjunction with the Director of Youth Ministry.
2. Oversee the development and implementation of the various educational programs of FPC, including but not limited to Sunday School, weekly Wednesday Together programming, Bible studies, Youth, Children’s Ministry, Vacation Bible School, Nursery, and special programming and events.
3. Oversee the research and selection of teaching materials and resources for the church’s Christian education efforts, as it relates to all ages/members.
4. Work in conjunction with the Associate Pastor and Director of Youth Ministry in the programming and selection of curriculum for Youth Ministry.
5. Work in tandem with the Senior Pastor and C.E. Committee in annual and monthly planning and visioning for the direction of programming.
6. Work with the chair of the C.E. Committee to develop and follow the budgetary guidelines developed by Session.
7. Represent Christian Education and Children’s Ministry in weekly Sunday worship to include the Children’s Time, Announcements, and Children’s Church as needed.
8. Coordinate with other staff and ministry divisions to help facilitate worship education, missions, fellowship and other liturgical offerings throughout the year.
9. Collaborate with the Youth Director in the development and implementation of Confirmation.
10. Promote the activities of Christian Education and Children’s Ministries through the newsletter, bulletin, social media, and other media in conjunction with the Communication Director.
11. Perform other duties that may be assigned by the Senior Pastor
Qualifications
• College degree is required. An emphasis in Education or Christian Education is strongly preferred. Significant commensurate experience will also be considered.
• Experience leading Christian Education programs is preferred.
• A growing personal faith in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior and a strong sense of calling to nurture the faith of children, youth, and adults.
• Ability to manage programs, recruit volunteers, and communicate with a wide variety of individuals.
• Ability to work as a team player.
• Understanding of and comfort with the Reformed tradition within the Christian faith.
Compensation
Salary: Commensurate with qualifications & experience
Healthcare: Medical, dental and life insurance from Day #1
Books/Continuing Education: 1 week (1 Sunday); $2000 annually
Vacation: 12 days per year (2 Sundays)
Other: 5% retirement contribution paid to a qualified SEP plan from Day #1
